Police: Man made false robbery report

— A Rogersville man told Athens Police this week he had been robbed at gunpoint of $10,000.

The only trouble, police say, is that the robbery apparently never happened.

Athens Police Chief Floyd Johnson said his department received a call from Randy Nesmith, 22, of 228 Spring St., Rogersville on Tuesday. He claimed he had withdrawn $10,000 from a bank, and was then robbed by three armed males at a Citgo gas station, located on U.S. 72 east near the Interstate 65 on-ramp.

After talking with Nesmith, investigators determined he had not withdrawn the money. Johnson said Nesmith then changed his story and told investigators the money was a gift from his girlfriend’s grandmother. He later said he was not robbed, but had instead lost the money.

Investigators also checked Nesmith’s vehicle and found a small bag of marijuana and a glass pipe.

Nesmith was then arrested on charges of false reporting of an incident, possession of marijuana and possession of paraphernalia, all misdemeanor charges.

After being booked at the police department, he was released on $3,000 bond.
