2 arrested in connection to thefts

— Two men have been arrested in connection with recent thefts of a riding lawnmower and a mini bike from homes near Athens.

Limestone County Sheriff’s Lt. Jay Stinnett and Investigator Johnny Morell on Thursday arrested Brad Michael Riggs, 33, of 10272 U.S. 72, Lot 3, Athens, on charges of first-degree theft, third-degree burglary and third-degree theft and additionally charged Charlie Wayne Phillips, 39, of 17590 Dupree Drive, Athens, with two counts of third-degree burglary and one count of third-degree theft in connection with the case, an official said. The officers had already arrested Phillips on a charge of first-degree theft in connection with the theft of a mini-bike from County Corner Road over the weekend, Chief Investigator Stanley McNatt said.

They are accused of stealing a Toro brand lawnmower valued at $300 from the 12000 block of Edith McCullough Way sometime between May 3 and 8, McNatt said.

“After further investigation, both admitted their involvements,” McNatt said.

Riggs was released from the Limestone County Jail after posting bail.

Phillips remains jailed with bail set at $11,000.
