BREAKING: Gun-toting Athens pharmacist disrupts would-be robbery

— An attempt to rob an Athens pharmacy this morning was foiled after a pharmacist pulled a gun on the would-be robber.

Athens Police Chief Floyd Johnson said a white male in his early 20’s entered the Westside Pharmacy at 1204 W. Market St. in Athens at about 8:13 a.m. The suspect produced a note, which said he had a gun and what prescription medications he wanted.

“The pharmacist pulled his gun on him and said, ‘Well, this is what I’ve got,’” Johnson said, adding the suspect then took off running from the store.

The police department brought out dogs to search the area and found the suspect a short time later.

Johnson said the name of the suspect will be released later today after he is formally charged.

When asked if gun-toting pharmacists was the norm in Athens, Johnson said he couldn’t speculate.

“You can never be too careful,” he said. “You never know who’s going to walk in.”
