North Alabama in slight risk category for severe weather; storms possible through Thursday

The National Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Okla., has placed North Alabama in the slight risk category for severe storms today.

The primary threat for tornadoes remains to the west, with portions of Texas, Arkansas and West Tennessee under an elevated risk for damaging thunderstorms, including a risk of tornadoes.

A hazardous weather outlook issued by the National Weather Service in Huntsville forecasts the possibility of isolated thunderstorms across North Alabama this afternoon. Gusty winds and heavy rainfall will be the primary threat.

The NWS said a round of more organized storms is possible this evening as an approaching cold front nears. Gusty winds of up to 40 mph, small hail and heavy rainfall is possible with the storms.

Scattered thunderstorms are possible throughout the day on Wednesday, some of which could also be accompanied by gusty winds, small hail and heavy rainfall. Storms are possible again on Thursday as a secondary piece of upper-level energy and accompanying cold front move across the region.
