BREAKING: APD arrests 5 in 2 drug busts

ATHENS — Five people were arrested, two of them on felony charges, following two drug busts Friday in Athens.

Capt. Trevor Harris said police simultaneously executed two search warrants, the first at 1210 Plato Jones St. There, detectives confiscated a small amount of crack cocaine and arrested three people on drug charges and unrelated warrants.

The second search was conducted at 301 Bridgeforth St., where detectives found a significant quantity of crack cocaine with an estimated street value of $2,500 to $3,000 and arrested two people, Harris said. Police also found unlawfully obtained prescription medication at the residence, he said.

The following people were arrested on the following charges:

• Leonard Curtis Bailey, 57, of 22918 Easter Ferry Road, Athens, possession of a controlled substance, third-degree assault and two counts of failing to appear in court on previous charges of public intoxication and public lewdness.

• Wendell Hyter, 47, of 16069 Fort Hampton Road, Elkmont, possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia and three counts of failing to appear in court on previous charges of no insurance, no driver’s license and switched tag;

• Rebecca Mannette Overton, 30, of 21301 Corey James Way, Lot 24, possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia

• Clifford Wayne Gill, 51, of 301 Bridgeforth St., Athens, two counts of possession of a controlled substance

• Mary Alice Beard, 38, of 114 Magnolia St., Athens, possession of a controlled substance
