Cullman trying to expand tourism

— CULLMAN, Ala. (AP) — A north Alabama county is trying to bring in more tourism dollars.

The Cullman Area Chamber of Commerce has hired Cecelia Smith as its first fulltime tourism director with the goal of promoting the area to visitors.

The county has older attractions including a massive Roman Catholic monastery, Cullman's Oktoberfest and a religious site called the Ave Maria Grotto.

Officials also want to promote the new "Rock the South" music festival, which is expected to become an annual event, and a planned Bass Fishing Hall of Fame.

Tourism director Sammie Danford says the area wants to organize all its tourism initiatives under one roof.

Cullman is about 50 miles north of Birmingham.
