— Early Tuesday Athens Police Officer Brandon Colburn stopped Deangelo Sherrod, 36, for speeding on Jefferson Street. While checking Sherrod officer Colburn learned the Lowndes County, Miss., resident had two felony warrants for Sherrod’s arrest for the sale of hydrocodone. Sherrod was arrested for being a fugitive from justice. Sherrod, who gave an address of 1220 Moss St., Columbus, Miss., was booked at the police department and transferred to the Limestone County Jail.

Meanwhile, late Saturday night Athens Police received a call to 909 North Jefferson Street to check the welfare of the people living there. Officers Jarrod Smith and Officer Abe Niedzwiecki  responded to the call.

When they arrived they could hear arguing and what sounded like a fight inside. The officers looked inside and saw two men in a fight with a baseball bat. When officers entered the residence they had to physically separate the men.

Officers determined Domingo Jose Gutierrez hit the other male in the head with the bat. Officers arrested Gutierrez for second-degree assault. Officers called an ambulance for the victim. When the ambulance arrived, he refused to go the hospital.

Officers did not list a reason for the altercation, or whether the victim was treated by medical personnel later. Gutierrez was transported to the police department where he was booked and then transferred to the county jail.
