The News Courier’s editorial and advertising staffs are the recipients of several awards presented by the Alabama Press Association and the Alabama Associated Press Association at recent events.
The editorial staff received seven awards Saturday at the Associated Press APME awards luncheon in Birmingham. The News Courier competed in Division 3, or publications with circulation of less than 15,000. Those awards included:
• Rebecca Croomes, first-place newsfeatures, “Stabbing victim remembered”;
• Lora Scripps, third-place lifestyle features, “Local girl collects coins for other kids with cancer”;
• Jean Cole, third-place business reporting, “Valls: One year later”;
• Jean Cole, first-place investigative reporting, “United Way board votes to cut funds”;
• Kim West, third-place sports deadline reporting, “Title Town”;
• Jonathan Deal, third-place sports feature, “Running man”; and
• Jonathan Deal, first-place participatory sports story, “Anything you can do”.
The News Courier’s editorial staff also received six Alabama Press Association awards at the group’s annual Better Newspaper Contest awards banquet on June 22 in Destin, Fla. Those awards included:
• Lora Scripps, second-place best lifestyles pages;
• The News Courier, second-place best local education coverage;
• Adam Smith, second-place best business story or column, “Carpenter signals beginning here”;
• Kim West, third-place best sports single event story, “Title Town”;
• Edd Davis, first-place best feature photo, “My hero”;
• Adam Smith, second-place best headline, “The elephant in the room”.
The News Courier’s advertising staff also picked up two advertising awards from the APA, including:
• Third-place, April Fool’s Day contest ad; and
• Third-place, ReMax Legacy: The Elmore Team.
