The final ingredients of the new shopping center next to Walmart in Athens will have to remain secret a little while longer.
Bill Ming, developer of the 32,000-square-foot Athens Shoppes off U.S. 72, said Thursday he is not, at this time, ready to release the names of any more tenants coming to the shopping center. Ming had already said Dollar Tree would anchor the development with Great Clips, Herbs & More, a major sandwich chain store and other tenants coming.
Construction began in January and should be finished by September.
No left turn
As Athens Shoppes slowly takes shape, work on a right turn lane is also underway to help prevent traffic from backing up on 72 once the Shoppes open. Work on that lane has temporarily slowed westbound traffic on 72 to one lane near the development.
Some have wondered how motorists will turn left from the Shoppes onto 72 once the development is completed. Ming said they won’t, by order of the Alabama Department of Transportation, due to safety concerns. Motorists can turn left onto 72 from Walmart and surrounding stores.
