BREAKING: Athens site to be marketed to data centers

— A 141-acre tract of land in Athens has been given “Primary - Ready to Recruit” status by the Tennessee Valley Authority, and could eventually be home to data centers or technology companies, according to a press release.

The land, referred to as the “Braly Site” by the Limestone Economic Development Association, is located along Interstate 65 at mile marker 347. It is south of the Huntsville-Browns Ferry Road interchange, and a majority of the site is positioned with direct interstate frontage.

TVA hired Chicago-based Deloitte Consulting to identify and evaluate potential data centers sites in the 80,000 square-mile TVA region, which includes northern Alabama and six other southeastern states.

"The data center market is experiencing tremendous growth, and we are glad to work with Valley communities like Athens/Limestone County so that they can compete and attract data centers and other targeted companies,” said John Bradley, senior vice president of economic development for TVA.

The primary sites in TVA’s region are pre-qualified sites with attributes ready for enterprise data centers and technology companies. Property attributes include accessibility, strong telecommunications infrastructure and the availability of reliable and competitively priced electric power.

“Having a primary data center site in Limestone County gives us an advantage when recruiting data centers and other critical infrastructure companies,” said Tom Hill, president of the Limestone County Economic Development Association. “We are pleased to participate in TVA/Deloitte’s data center site evaluation program that validates our site’s strengths and readies us for when prospective companies are planning to make new investments.”

TVA will partner with Limestone County and regional, state and community partners to actively market the site to a global market, the release said.
