Ramirez murder trial postponed

— The trial scheduled Tuesday for accused murderer Dora Ramirez has been moved to September so attorneys could file various motions in the case, an official said.

Jury selection was scheduled to begin Tuesday in the case, Limestone County District Attorney Brian Jones said. However, both the prosecution and defense agreed to the delay in order to file motions, he said.

The new trial date is Sept. 8.

Ramirez, 28, of Decatur, is accused in the December 2005 execution-style shooting of Andres Flores Galicia, 31, of Decatur. She allegedly lured Galicia to rural Limestone County so her husband, Ulises Arturo Reyes Mercado could kill him. Investigators believe Ramirez pretended she had car trouble and when her alleged lover— who went by the name “Flores” — arrived on Mooresville Road, Mercado allegedly shot him in the face and the back of the head.

Ramirez remains free on bail pending her trial.

Mercado, who is still wanted in connection with the murder, fled to Mexico before he could be arrested.

Alabama Assistant Attorney General Stephanie Billingslea will prosecute the case. The attorney general’s office was called in after Jones recused because he had once filed a motion for Ramirez in another case.

Dan Totten and Lucas Beaty are defending Ramirez.

Circuit Judge Jimmy Woodroof Jr. will preside at the trial.
