Huntsville space scientist Frederick Ordway dies

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (AP) — A space scientist who helped send Americans to the moon has died.

Frederick Ordway III died Tuesday in Huntsville. He was 87.

Ordway worked with Wernher von Braun on missile systems in the 1950s in north Alabama, and he later played key roles in the Apollo lunar program.

Ordway also wrote more than 30 books, and he served as a technical adviser on the film "2001: A Space Odyssey."

Recently, Ordway has been working on an exhibit about the movie that's supposed to open next year at the U.S. Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville.

Daughter Aliette Marisol Lambert says her father never lost his love for space. She says his top goal was for the world to keep its eyes on the universe.

Relatives didn't release the cause of death.
