SeaPort Airlines picked to serve northwest Alabama

MUSCLE SHOALS, Ala. (AP) — Officials at the Northwest Alabama Regional Airport have chosen a new airline to provide passenger service.

Airport Director Barry Griffith tells the TimesDaily of Florence ( ) SeaPort Airlines was picked from three airlines that submitted proposals to provide subsidized commuter air service.

The airline will serve passengers as part of the Essential Air Service — program by the U.S. Department of Transportation aimed at ensuring that smaller airports are served by certified air carriers.

Griffith says Silver Airways' contract expires Sept. 30 and SeaPort will begin service in October or November.
