The Limestone County Board of Education agreed Thursday to pay Osborn & Associates $24,000 to provide schematics of a dozen of the school system’s 13 school campuses.
Limestone Superintendent Dr. Tom Sisk said the state and technology provider Virtual Alabama require the school district system to have updated technical drawings in order to move forward with tech upgrades.
The system is installing wireless cabling at every school in the district, except Blue Springs Elementary, which already has wireless and building schematics. The $1 million project is part of the system’s $26.1 million capital outlay plan approved by the board in March.
In additional to the traditional paper format, the schematics will be provided digitally, including in PDF and computer-aided design (CAD) files. The work should be completed in three to four weeks, according to architect Daniel Osborn.
“This will provide very detailed schematics of our schools. The CAD file will allow us to add or subtract (to the plans),” said Steve Wallace, maintenance director for Limestone Schools. “Some of the school buildings are old, and we need to update the measurements for every room and every hallway.”
The board accepted a $3,000 request to pay additional travel expenses for two instructors from the Limestone Career Technical Center to accompany five students to the SkillsUSA national competition in Kansas City, Mo.
Carpentry instructor Dan Williams and informational technology instructor Ted James will accompany SkillsUSA first-place state winners Bryce Cox, Ryan Graham, Morgan Garris, John McKinney and Douglas Fields to the June 24-29 competition.
According to James, students from the Career Tech Center have participated in SkillsUSA technical and leadership events for the past 41 years.
The school board will meet at 7 a.m. Thursday, May 23, at the Central Office. Personnel items will be considered, including contract renewals and non-renewals for teachers.
The county’s six high schools will hold graduation at 4, 6 and 8 p.m. Thursday, May 23, and Friday, May 24. West Limestone, Clements and Tanner will graduate May 23, and East Limestone, Ardmore and Elkmont commencements will be held May 24.
