The Limestone school system has adjusted its staffing policy to allow school principals the option of keeping temporary teachers instead of having to re-hire them.
The policy change, which was approved by the board of education on May 2, applies to any teacher hired after a school year begins. The new policy prevents a temporary teacher from having to repeat the hiring process.
“This will allow (the principals) to retain without having to automatically non-renew contracts,” said Dr. Tom Sisk, superintendent of Limestone County Schools. “Teachers (with temporary contracts) need a job, and they get grabbed up by other schools.”
School board member Charles Shoulders described changing the policy as a positive for instructional personnel and the Central Office.
“I see it as a win-win situation for both the employees and the system. When employees go home for the summer, they’re looking for job security,” Shoulders said.
The board also accepted Sisk’s request to amend school staffing policies for school office staff.
The superintendent recommended proactively adding an additional office clerical unit for schools with student populations of 1,200 or above.
Sisk said principals would have the discretion to assign duties to the clerical worker within the guidelines and job descriptions already adopted by board policy.
