Fire chief considers entrapment victim 'lucky'

— A Limestone County man rescued Tuesday after being trapped under an access bridge in his truck is recovering at Huntsville Hospital.

A spokesperson with the hospital said Michael Worthey, 54, of Limestone County was in “good” condition Wednesday.

Worthey, who was discovered by K-9 officers at Limestone Correctional Facility, was extricated from his 1993 Ford Ranger after being trapped in a ditch under a small access bridge off Love Branch Road.

In and out of consciousness when he was found, Worthey first told rescuers he had been trapped since Sunday. East Limestone Fire Chief Joey Boyd said family members later told officials they had seen him Monday. “He had been there long enough for the engine of the truck to cool off,” Boyd said. “The motor wasn’t hot.”

Boyd believes Worthey is “lucky” considering the shape the vehicle is in and the way it lodged under the bridge. “If he would have stayed there any longer the outcome could have been different,” he said.

According to Boyd, it was one of the most challenging extrications his department has encountered. Emergency workers had to tear out the remains of the truck using the Jaws of Life and a reciprocating saw as well as other equipment to get to Worthey. He was airlifted to Huntsville Hospital with multiple injuries. Published reports said his breastbone and nose were broken and that he had injuries to his spine and kidneys.

A number of agencies worked together to free Worthey from the wreckage including East Limestone Volunteer Fire Department, Huntsville-Madison Rescue Squad and Harvest Volunteer Fire Department.

“I’m happy with the way all the agencies worked together,” Boyd said. “It was a good day. Things went well.”
