Smith named 2A title game MVP

Rich and Maclin join Smith on Final Four all-tournament team

— BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Tanner senior point guard Justin "Bubba" Smith earned Class 2A Final Four MVP after the Rattlers’ 61-45 victory in the 2A championship game Friday at the Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Complex.

Smith finished with 14 points, four rebounds, four steals and three assists against LaFayette in the championship game, and led Tanner with 12 points and nine rebounds in the 51-50 win against Luverne in the state semifinals on Tuesday.

Joining Smith on the 2A Final Four All-Tournament team were senior forward Fred Rich and senior guard Greg Maclin.

Rich, the game MVP in Tanner’s win against Washington County in the 2A football championship in December, had 14 points, eight rebounds and two blocks against LaFayette, and six points, rebounds and two blocks against Luverne.

Maclin, who plans to play football and basketball at UAB in the fall and signed a full football scholarship earlier this month with the Blazers, was assigned to guard LaFayette’s best player and contributed five points, five rebounds, four steals and two blocks in the title game. Maclin, the team’s leading scorer, had 11 points, six rebounds, two steals and two assists against Luverne.
