Gov. Bentley chairs first meeting of Athens State University Board of Trustees



Gov. Robert Bentley chaired the first meeting of the newly-appointed Athens State Board of Trustees Friday.

In September of 2012, Governor Bentley appointed eight people to serve on the Athens State board.  This is the first time the school will be led by its own board since it transferred from the purview of the Methodist Church to the State of Alabama in 1975, becoming a public school.

Athens State University President Bob Glenn called it an historic day for the school.

“We assembled an extraordinary slate of candidates from which Governor Bentley made his decision to fill the eleven positions on the board," Glenn said. "We were humbled by those civic leaders, alumni, and friends of the University who came forward to offer their support to our great institution. The Governor’s decision exemplifies the talent needed to promote our mission.”

Athens State is unique in that it is one of five remaining upper-level collegiate institutions in the United States.  The University offers coursework at the junior and senior level and awards bachelor’s degrees from three colleges - Arts and Sciences, Business, and Education.
