Historic blizzard revisited 20 years later

— On March 12, 1993, residents of Athens and Limestone County went about their day as usual.

Some picked up copies of that day’s The News Courier, where a yellow box on the left-hand side of the front page showed the day’s high would reach 45 degrees and a wintry mix was expected late in the evening — nothing too alarming.

As schools let out, families flocked to the grocery stores to pick up, what else, bread and milk. Supposedly, people were concerned enough about the weather to clog the lines at checkout counters for a half-hour or so.

What they awoke to Saturday was beyond anyone’s expectations.
