Learn-to-Read spelling bee keeps town abuzz

— For teams across Athens, one letter could make all the d-i-f-f-e-r-e-n-c-e this Saturday at the 18th annual Learn-to-Read Council Spelling Bee.

“It’s an enjoyable morning,” said council director Rhonda Andrews. “They come ready to win.”

Andrews, who has been with the council for more than 20 years, said she has been involved in the organization of all the spelling bees, and it’s a fun affair all the way around.

“We’re just real excited,” she said.

During the mid-1990s, Andrews and former board member Pat Waybright were tossing around ideas for fundraisers, when Waybright mentioned she had heard of a sister organization in Montgomery that put on a charity spelling bee. A group from Athens traveled down to observe and decided the bee was the way to go.
