Fire Auxiliary hosting 4th annual golf tourney

— The Athens Fire and Rescue Auxiliary is seeking entrants for its fourth annual golf tournament to benefit its Christmas philanthropy, “Shop with a Firefighter.”

During the Christmas holidays, Athens firefighters pair up with Limestone County children and embark on a $100 shopping spree at Walmart to buy clothing and toys. The auxiliary pays for the project through fundraisers held throughout the year.

The tournament will be Thursday, Oct. 17, at Canebrake Club at 23015 Founders Circle off Lindsay Lane South in Athens. The driving range opens and lunch will be served at 11:30 a.m., followed by a 12:45 p.m. rules meeting and a 1 p.m. shotgun start.

Registration cost is $400 per four-person team. A package including a mulligan per nine holes and a power drive will be sold for $20 per golfer.

Door prizes will be announced during the awards ceremony, and first place will be awarded $600, $400 for second and $200 for third. Additional cash prizes will be given for longest drive and closest to the pin, with a vehicle grand prize for carding a hole-in-one.

The 18-hole Canebrake course, designed by Ron Garl, is covered with rolling hills, trees, streams and lakes and provides short and long-distance fairways. Piney Creek winds through the front nine, while the back nine features elevation changes.
