Budd McLaughlin, who spent more than 30 years in the newspaper industry within the greater Huntsville area, has joined The News Courier staff as managing editor.
“Budd is a great match for The News Courier and its dedicated and talented team,” said General Manager Katherine Miller. “We are excited to have him on board. His experience and leadership will be a great asset to the newspaper and the community.”
A native of Pennsville, N.J., McLaughlin is a graduate of Auburn University.
He began his years in journalism at a hometown paper in New Jersey before moving to the Huntsville area in 1979 to become The Huntsville News sports editor.
He worked at the Newport News Daily Press in Virginia from 1983-85 and The Huntsville News as news editor from 1985-96. He served as The Huntsville Times night city editor from 1996-2008, business editor from 2008-12 and editor of Limestone Spirit and Madison Spirit from 2010-12.
He most recently worked as a freelance writer for magazines, businesses and websites and also was digital content producer for WAFF Channel 48.
McLaughlin is married to Mary. They have three sons, Lance and wife Stephanie, Shane and wife Amber, and Bo, as well as two grandchildren.
“I am excited about this opportunity,” McLaughlin said. “I look forward to serving the readers and working with this talented staff of professionals to help keep the residents of Athens and Limestone County informed and enlightened.”
