ASU career fair draws about 30 recruiters

— About 30 recruitment tables dotted the Sandridge Student Center ballroom Tuesday during Athens State University’s fall career fair as student ambassadors greeted visitors and gave out homemade banana nut bread.

Some undergraduates came clad in classroom attire while others milled among the tables in sharp suits as they chatted with representatives from various career fields and graduate schools.

Recruiters ranged from the U.S. Army and Alabama Department of Revenue to banks and telecommunications companies.

William Jamar, a state revenue examiner, said the career fair has proven fruitful in the past, with his department hiring ASU grads from previous job expos.

“We look for students with accounting, finance and business majors,” said Jamar. He attends up to eight college career fairs as a regional recruiter, with the Department of Revenue participating in about 20 annually.

“We do have entry-level jobs where we hire college graduates, and we have hired people from ASU,” he said.

ASU, which has 3,177 students enrolled this fall including 1,910 seniors, sponsors career fairs in the fall and spring semesters.

Saralynn Mitchell, director of career development at ASU, said the spring event draws more students, but the university holds two career fairs to allow more opportunities to students, especially those graduating in December.

“It’s always bigger in the spring because we’ll have about nine or 10 school systems,” said Mitchell, who estimated 60 to 70 students participated on Tuesday. “A large part of our university is our College of Education, but school systems typically don’t start looking until spring.”

To help prepare students for job interviews, the ASU Career Development Center is sponsoring Mock Interview Madness in November. The promotion allows students to register for free mock interviews on Thursdays throughout the month. To register, call 256-233-8140.
