Jesus “Jesse” Teran of East Limestone, died Monday at Huntsville Hospital following a sewer accident Saturday on Gardenview Lane about 6 miles east of Athens.
Teran, 20, was buried Wednesday afternoon at Roselawn Cemetery after he and his brother, George, were injured in the accident.
The accident, reported at about 1 p.m. off Gardenview Lane, injured the brothers while they were working on-site for Christopher Plumbing & Electrical of Athens, a contractor for the Limestone County Water and Sewer Authority.
East Limestone Volunteer Fire Department Chief Joey Boyd told WAFF-48 that Jesus was working on a sewer line in a deep hole when a large rock fell into the hole on top of him, causing a large cut to his side.
A MedFlight helicopter transported Teran to Huntsville Hospital, where he died Monday, according to a friend of the Teran family. A hospital spokeswoman said on Tuesday she could not provide details about Teran since he was not listed as a patient.
George was injured when he fell into the hole and was taken to Athens-Limestone Hospital. Boyd told WAFF that the second injured worker reported back pain.
George, whom the acquaintance said was in a wheelchair at the funeral, and his family declined to provide a statement about the accident. The Teran family lives about 1 1/2 miles from the where the accident took place.
The Water and Sewer Authority confirmed the Teran brothers had been injured at the CPE job site on Saturday. LCWSA General Manager Byron Cook said Wednesday he is awaiting an accident safety report from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.
Cook said Authority employees were not at the project site, but Hethcoat & Davis of Nashville, the LCWSA’s engineering contractor, did have an inspector working on-site.
“We’re sorry to the family for their loss,” said Cook. “We do not have any further information to release at this time, and we are waiting for reports to come in.”
McConnell Funeral Home in Athens handled funeral arrangements for the Teran family, which chose not to release an obituary.
