Bobby and Lisa Holt could be called the perfect couple.
“We’ve been married seven years,” Bobby Holt said. “It’s been awesome.”
They live in Athens and work for the same company — Steelcase.
They even work the same shifts.
They have similar interests including one that’s important in this part of the country: They are college football fans.
But, and there’s always a “but,” here’s where their “perfection” ends.
You see, Lisa is a big-time Auburn fan.
And Bobby, well, he’s for the Crimson Tide.
Needless to say, the two may not be seeing eye-to-eye this week with what could be the biggest Iron Bowl ever coming up.
It’s the first time that Alabama and Auburn are playing each other and both are in the top four rankings: The Tide is No. 1 and the Tigers are No. 4.
So, have there been bets?
“No bets, yet,” Lisa said.
Nope, they both said.
In fact, things have been pretty calm around the homefront this week.
“We’re doing all right this week,” Lisa said. “He knows Alabama is going to lose.”
Bobby agreed that, so far, there is peace.
“It’s not brought up,” he said. “We’ll just wait to see what happens.
“But I figure we’ll beat Auburn.”
Like most every other workplace in the state, Steelcase is a plant divided between the crimson loyalists and the blue-and-orange faithful.
But the Holts both work in friendly camps.
“Most everybody who works where I’m at is for Auburn,” Lisa said. “I’m lucky.”
“She got lucky where she works,” he said.
And Bobby is fortunate for the section he works, because “he runs around yelling ‘Roll Tide’,” Lisa said.
Interestingly, the Holts weren’t always fans of their teams.
“I was an Alabama fan when I lived home with my parents,” Lisa said. “When I was 17, I felt sorry for the underdog.
“Now, I’m the only Auburn fan in my family.”
Bobby, meanwhile, was a major NASCAR fan and college football was an after-thought.
However, the last couple years “I’ve really paid attention,” he said.
“I dropped NASCAR for ‘Bama. I haven’t seen a race all year.”
When it comes to predictions, they’re both diplomatic because, after all, they still have to share the house.
“I think it will be a close game,” Lisa said. “They’ve both had good seasons.”
Bobby agreed and put the game in perspective.
“It’s such a rivalry game and a lot of people are really ugly about it,” he said. “For us, it’s a lot of good fun.”
