Athens High's Wallace awarded ROTC medal

— Athens High student Teya Wallace received the Bronze ROTC Medal, during a recent John Wade Keyes DAR meeting in Athens.

The National Society DAR, based in Washington D.C., awards the medals via its National Defense Committee.

People selected to receive the national award must exhibit outstanding commitment to the values of the American military.

The National Defense Committee was established by the NSDAR in 1926 to assist in carrying out the patriotic, educational and historical objectives of the National Society Daughters of The American Revolution, and to promote an enlightened public opinion of our American military.

Through the NSDAR National Defense Committee, The Bronze ROTC Medal, is awarded to an exemplary student in a secondary school JROTC program. Medals may be worn according to JROTC protocol.

Athens High School JROTC instructor, Retired Col. Eli Ballard, U.S. Army Special Forces, nominated Wallace for the prestigious award. His motto is “motivating young people to be better citizens.”

Ballard explained why Wallace deserves the award.

“She exhibits an above-average maturity, a love of country and a desire to excel,” he said.

Wallace was born in Colorado Springs, Colo. She is the daughter of Francesca Lara and Mark D. Wallace.

Wallace also lived in Florida for eight years.

She later moved to the Athens area, entering the Athens City School system in her eighth-grade year. She is currently attending Athens High School.

Wallace is a Louisiana State University fan, and plans to attend the university and become a sports paramedic. She is a member of JROTC, plays on the Athens volleyball team, enjoys football and learning about American history. She has four siblings — Kaylee, Alexis, Trinity and Junior.

Wallace expressed her appreciation in receiving the award, and said she is thankful for her family and honored to be recognized for her patriotism and hard work.
