— HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (AP) — A doctor whose son pleaded guilty to killing a middle school classmate is set for trial on charges of trying to help the boy escape justice.

Iqbal Memon is set to go on trial today in Huntsville. He is charged with hindering prosecution for allegedly helping son Hammad Memon in a bid to flee the country.

Hammad Memon was 14 when he shot and killed a classmate at Discovery Middle School in Madison in 2010.

After the killing authorities arrested Memon and his mother during what police described as an attempt to flee the country for Pakistan.

The woman also is charged with hindering prosecution and awaits trial.

Hammad Memon pleaded guilty and is serving 30 years. His father was also recently charged with Medicaid theft.
