Athens City Council meeting notes

ATHENS — Athens City Council members addressed problems with overgrown property, remitted money to city schools for laptop computers and handled other matters during their regular meeting Monday. Here is a synopsis of action:

• Held a public hearing to take comments on overgrown grass and weeds at 18738 N. Jefferson St.

• Declared as a public nuisance the property at 18738 N. Jefferson St.

• Took no action on a request to declare as a public nuisance the property at 1505 Levert Ave., because the property owner has cut the overgrown grass and weeds.

• Held a public hearing on a collapsed fence at a home with a pool at 516 N. Jefferson St. but took no action because the owner addressed the problem.

• Agreed to pay up to $17,020 for 10 laptop computers for police vehicles through the North Alabama Cooperative Purchasing Association.

• Agreed to pay up to $1,549 to Computer Support Systems for fiber splicing for Fire Station No. 2.

• Approved $200 cash advance for the Electric Department for Landon Lawrence

• Approved travel expenses for the Electric Department, including approximately $125 for Gary Scroggins, $488 for Chris Seibert and $1,077 for Ronnie Marks to attend Electric Cities annual convention.

• Declared as surplus the following equipment so it can be sold: 2005 International 7400 recycling truck, 1995 International 4900 recycling truck and 2001 Mack MR 690 S commercial front-end loader.

• Agreed to pay up to $10,600 to add hydraulic plumbing to an existing garbage truck so it can be used for residential and commercial work.

• Agree to renew for three years a contract with PRA Government Services (formerly AlaTax) for business license fee/recovery services.

• Agreed to release $300,000 in sales tax in fiscal 2013 (and about $500,000 more in fiscal 2014) to Athens City Schools so officials can buy laptop computers for students. The previous council had already agreed to set aside for city schools 20 percent of the 1-cent sales tax increase that took effect in January, which currently totals about $600,000.

• Agreed to pay up to $36,000 to Christopher Professional Enterprises for an underground duct bank for the South Limestone Substation exit circuits. This is located off U.S. 31 between the Carpenter Technology plant and the tractor dealership. 

• Agreed to pay $9,400 in matching money for engineering for the U.S. 31 Streetscape project, which is a pedestrian trail to be created in east Athens that will run east from Linton Road out to Publix shopping center, west across Interstate 65 to the exiting walking trail.
