Sex offender arrested over travel plans

— A registered sex offender was arrested Monday in Athens after he failed to notify authorities of his travel plans. Vernon Lee Wells, 57, of 1402 N. Jefferson Street, was arrested on a warrant by Athens officer Mac McWhorter for a violation of travel restrictions.

The warrant was issued after Wells was not at his residence on several occasions during resident checks on the week of April 11.

Under Alabama law an adult sex offender that intends to temporarily be away from his county for a period of three or more consecutive days must report that information in person prior to leaving.
