Tim Tebow Act clears committee in Montgomery

— Perhaps the most recognizable home-schooled graduate is New York Jets quarterback Tim Tebow, who led Nease High School to a Florida state championship in 2005, and two years later became the first former stay-at-home student to win the Heisman Trophy.

Tebow is the namesake for a contentious education bill currently working its way through the gauntlet of the Alabama Legislature. Introduced as Senate Bill 186 and House Bill 287 and known as the Tim Tebow Act, it would allow stay-at-home students to participate in public school athletics within their residential school district.

The bill was originated by Sen. Shadrack McGill, R-Huntsvillle, in the Senate, and Rep. Ed Henry, R-Hartselle, in the House.
