Art on the Square, Spirit of Athens merge

— Changes around town are in full effect this year, and Diane Lehr and Trisha Black want to be ready.

Lehr and Black announced last week that Spirit of Athens will absorb Art on the Square, and the two will work on providing opportunities for local artists to interact with the community.

According to a press release from the city of Athens, board members for the groups saw the merger as a better way to involve the community in the arts year-round, instead of focusing on the one festival in the fall.

The move was also agreed upon as a way to organize an art incubator site at the old W.E. Estes & Son location on Washington Street.

However, this also means there will be no Art on the Square event this September, as it coincides with the Grease Festival.

“This is a great opportunity for both organizations to work for the good of the city,” said Lehr, who is president of Art on the Square. “Our mission remains the same even though our focus will change. We seek to strengthen our community by promoting art education, supporting the work of artists and bringing cultural events to the area.”
