AT&T outage affects businesses in Athens

AT&T is experiencing a widespread outage in North Alabama and businesses in Athens are being affected.

Areas in Lauderdale County, Madison County, Limestone County and Morgan County have reported phone and Internet outages, according to news partner WAFF-48.

According to an AT&T spokesperson, an outside contractor cut a Metro ethernet cable while working between Huntsville and Athens Wednesday.

The cut did not affect voice service.  It only affected business data services in Athens, Hartselle, Cullman, Florence, the Shoals and Decatur.

A lot of cable is having to be replaced but repairs are expected to be finished by late afternoon.
