Planning committee seeks input for president’s ball

— School officials are seeking committee members and community input for a president’s ball to be held at Athens State University’s Carter Athletic Center.

Organizers initially met in January to lay the groundwork for a gala benefiting the ASU Foundation. The formal event is set for Feb. 28, 2015.

“What I hope the President’s Ball will accomplish is to provide a fitting setting for all the beneficiaries of this great institution, the students, faculty, staff, alumni and community friends to celebrate the impact of this exceptional educational enterprise,” said university President Dr. Bob Glenn in a press release.

Pamela Lang Shepard, wife of university trustee Tazwell Shepard, is the event chair, and Genie Johnston Woodroof, wife of Limestone Probate Judge and ASU Foundation board member Charles Woodroof, is co-chair.

The second planning meeting is at noon Wednesday in the conference room of Waters Hall, which faces Hobbs Street. The public is invited.

“When you bring great people together and unite them around a worthy cause, great things happen,” Glenn said. “That is the story of Athens State University and it is reason for celebration.”

Pam Jarrett, assistant director of development at ASU, said during a recent board of trustees meeting there are 13 sub-committees in place to plan the event.

She said ideally, the committees would include 100 members from different geographical areas and backgrounds. She said the ball is going to feature “lots of dancing, a great band and a margarita bar.”

“We had 50 people show up for the first meeting, including people from Cullman, Morgan, Madison and Limestone counties,” Jarrett said. “We believe this will be a coveted event and only 600 tickets will be available.”

ASU officials said they also are seeking event sponsorships for approximately 75 tables with eight seats apiece.
