3 finalists chosen for Clements coaching vacancy

A multi-tiered process to find the next Clements High School football coach is approaching the finish line as school officials on Friday announced three finalists for the teaching/coaching position.

The candidates to lead the Class 3A Colts are Brilliant head football coach Jarrod Helms, former White Plains head coach Heath Harmon and Pleasant Home head coach Cody McCain.

Brilliant and Pleasant Home are both 1A programs, while White Plains is a 3A school moving up to 4A this fall.

Clements is looking to rebound from three consecutive 1-9 campaigns after four straight trips to the playoffs.

Helms went 13-19 overall in three seasons at Brilliant in Marion County, guiding the Tigers to a 7-5 mark and a second-round playoff appearance in 2013.

Harmon, who also was head coach at Cordova, Munford and Andalusia, has a 23-37 record from 2008-13 at White Plains in Anniston. The Wildcats went 5-5 in three years, including last season, posting losing records during the other three.

McCain had a 6-14 record in two seasons at Pleasant Home in Andalusia, leading the Eagles to the first round of the playoffs in his first season in 2012.

Dr. Tom Sisk, superintendent of Limestone County Schools, said a search committee whittled the candidates from 107 applicants to 14 and a second committee narrowed it down to three.

A third committee — including Sisk and Clements Principal Keith Hairrell — reviewed Helms, Harmon and McCain, giving the superintendent the option of recommending one of them at the April 8 school board meeting, or dipping back into the 14-candidate pool for three new finalists.

The job posting listed a salary range of $36,867 to $86,569 based on years of experience and degree level, plus a coaching supplement. The vacancy was created in December 2013, when first-year coach and physical education teacher Dan Beavers resigned after 10 months.
