Changes for new season at Bankhead National Forest

— With spring just around the corner – Thursday to be exact — thoughts turn to spending time in the great outdoors.

Bankhead National Forest, a little more than an hour’s drive south of Athens, has undergone some changes since last season.

A major change is that some recreation area management is now in private hands.

Clear Creek and Corinth recreation areas are now managed by American Land and Leisure. The company charges for services and maintains a different fee structure from other sites.

Also, national America the Beautiful Passes for day use will not apply at these two sites.

The pass program is an assortment of annual and lifetime passes that provide U.S. citizens and visitors an affordable and convenient way to access federal recreation lands.

The five passes — Annual, Military, Senior Access and Volunteer — provide a discount to cardholders at sites except for the Clear Creek and Corinth recreation areas in the Bankhead National Forest.

Some campsites at Bankhead will require reservations. Visitors are asked to call 1-877-444-6777 or reserve online at http://www.reserveamerica.com.
