— Those who would like to own a piece of original art will have the opportunity to browse a variety of artists during the final Summer Art Stroll of the year Friday.

Athens Arts League will host the stroll from 4-8 p.m. on the Limestone County Courthouse Lawn on The Square in Athens.

Participants can listen to live music, watch artisans make wheel-thrown pottery or paint on a number of mediums well as take part in a number of children’s activities.  Several of the restaurants and shops will open late for the event.

Wideman Collection

Athens State University’s Center for Lifelong Learning is joining in the festivities. As a way to celebrate the final stroll, the University’s Wideman Collection of bronze sculptures will be on display at the center, located at 122 S. Marion Street on the east side of the square.

ASU received the collection of bronze western-themed sculptures by artists John Solomon Sandridge and Marshall Mitchell. In addition, the collection contains reproductions of works by Frederic Remington. Frances Wideman of Birmingham  donated the art pieces to ASU in memory of her husband, the late Dr. Gilder Wideman. Dr. Wideman is remembered as a noted doctor of obstetrics and gynecology, civic leader and veteran.

The bronze sculptures will be on display at the Center of Lifelong Learning through September.
