BREAKING: Domestic incident places schools on alert

— An Athens man was arrested Monday after a domestic disturbance put three city schools on alert.

Louis Jermaine Cattage, 32, of 108 Cedar St. in Athens was arrested by Athens Police and charged with third-degree domestic violence and carrying a pistol without a permit, according to Police Chief Floyd Johnson.

A press release from the Office of the Mayor described how the situation unfolded.

At 10:42 a.m. Athens Police responded to a call regarding a domestic disturbance in the 100 block of Cedar Street.

Johnson said the caller, a woman, stated she and her husband (Cattage) were arguing when he attacked her and later grabbed a pistol and threatened to commit suicide.

Johnson said the woman left the residence and went to a service station on U.S. 72 to call police.

She later told the dispatcher her husband called her after she reported the incident to police and said he was going to pick up their children from school. Johnson said officers learned the couple has three children who attend three different city schools.

Lt. Steve Moore notified officers that Cattage was likely headed to one of the schools.

“We sent officers to each of the schools and notified all three principals and the superintendent about the situation,” Johnson said.

Officer Randy Vickers spotted Cattage driving on Minuteman Drive toward Brookhill Elementary School. When Cattage did not stop at the school but headed to Sanderfer Road, Vickers followed and stopped Cattage on Sanderfer where he was taken into custody.

Cattage had a .25-caliber handgun loaded with one bullet in his possession. He was charged with third-degree domestic violence and carrying a pistol without a permit.

The case is under investigation.

“No one at the schools was ever threatened, and all city schools have restricted access,

Johnson said. “My officers and the school system responded as they were supposed to, and we were able to get this situation resolved quickly.”
