Athens man arrested in alleged check scam

Morgan County authorities have arrested an Athens man and a Decatur man allegedly involved in a check scam involving several Decatur banks and merchants, according to Morgan County Sheriff Ana Franklin.

Following a monthlong investigation, Morgan County investigators this week arrested Justin Zontana Patterson, 21, of 22168 Menowa Trail, Athens, on a charge of second-degree possession of a forged instrument, and Reginald Davis, 26, of 1407 Brookline Ave. S.W., Decatur, on three counts of second-degree possession of a forged instrument, according to the sheriff.

Patterson was being held in the Morgan County Jail in lieu of a $50,000 bail and Davis in lieu of a $105,000 bail.

According to the sheriff, a manager at Traditions Bank in Priceville reported the scam in September 2012. The men allegedly opened a checking account, one with an electronically forged Regions Bank check from Calhoun Community College and the other with an electronically forged Regions check from General Electric.

Chief Investigator Kyle Wilson identified the suspects and found them at a Decatur apartment, the sheriff said.
