Gas edged up over Labor Day, but still low from year ago

SALEM — Retail gasoline prices roses 1.8 cents a gallon this past Thursday — the largest one-day increase since July 17, according to AAA.

Despite the increase, which came in time for the Labor Day holiday, the price of gasoline was still discounted from a year ago, AAA said.

On Friday, the national average price for a gallon of gasoline was $3.58, AAA reported.

A week ago, the price was $3.54.

In July, the price was $3.62.

A year ago, the price was $3.80 a gallon.

In Alabama, the average retail price of regular unleaded gasoline ranged from $3.43 to $3.27, according to AAA.

In Athens, the price of regular unleaded gas ranged from $3.22 per gallon on West Elm Street to $3.49 per gallon on U.S. 72, according to Motor Trend.

While retail gas prices remain well below last year’s levels, tension and violence in the Middle East and North Africa are pushing global oil prices higher, AAA said.
