A Madison man accused of trying to pass a phony $50 bill at Taco Bell in Athens has been charged with first-degree possession of a forged instrument.
Athens Police investigators arrested Byron Christian Dubose, 28, Wednesday afternoon after restaurant employees noticed the bill and called police, Police Chief Floyd Johnson said.
“When investigators talked with Dubose about the counterfeit money, he said he got it from two unknown white males he sold drugs to the night before,” Johnson said.
Investigators also recovered $700 in counterfeit money in denominations of $5s, $50s and $100s, the chief said.
The investigation into the case is continuing and more arrests are possible, Johnson said.
Dubose was booked at the Police Department and transferred to the Limestone County Jail, where he was released after posting bail of $5,000.
