A Thursday-evening fire at Ruby Tuesday off U.S. 72 East in Athens has closed the restaurant pending investigation.
Athens Fire Department received a call at approximately 7:30 p.m. of a fire at the Athens eatery near the I-65 exit at mile marker 351.
According to scanner traffic, flames were showing from the building when crews arrived, however their response was impeded by electrical equipment inside of the wall where the fire was located. All employees were evacuated safely and no injuries were reported.
Fire Chief Tony Kirk said the flames were deep inside a wall on the southwest side, and his department had to wait for Athens Utilities to shut off the current flowing to the building. The next step was tearing out parts of the structure to make sure all flames were doused. Athes Fire reported the fire out at 8:08 p.m.
Ruby Tuesday Area Director Charlie Eblen said he did not have comments at this time, but hoped to have the matter resolved quickly so the restaurant could open again quickly.
Kirk added a state fire investigator would be on scene Thursday night to determine the cause of the incident.
