DECATUR — A former manager of Marvin's Building Materials in Decatur has been charged with felony theft for allegedly stealing more than $8,000 from the store over the course of several months, records show.

Brandon Lee Drake Owens, 23, of 2162 Westbury Court S.W., Decatur, is accused of stealing the money by conducting fraudulent merchandise returns, records show.

"The total amount was $8,012 stolen over a period of months in 33 separate transactions," Detective Brent Best said Tuesday. The thefts began in April, he said.

The investigation was triggered Aug. 28 by a loss-prevention associate at the store who reported the possible theft to Decatur Police. Best developed Owens as the suspect. He did not know how long Owens had been a manager.

Owens turned himself in to police Monday and was charged with first-degree theft. He was booked at the Police Department and transferred to the Morgan County Jail, where bail is set at $5,000.

Best and Officer Juan Penuelas were the arresting officers in the case.
