BREAKING: Motorist with child chases alleged hit-and-run driver

— A motorist chased down an alleged hit-and-run driver Tuesday in northeastern Limestone County, and a deputy found and arrested him less than an hour later, an official said.

Sheriff Mike Blakely said a dispatch received a call about noon from a motorist with a small child whose vehicle had been struck at Johnson and Harvest roads.

The caller chased the alleged hit-and-run driver to Alabama 251 and East Limestone Road, where the suspect jumped out of his vehicle and fled on foot, the sheriff said.

The caller blocked the alleged hit-and-run vehicle, which was still occupied by a female passenger, and waited for authorities, Blakely said.

Deputy Dale Townsend searched for the suspect and found him in a yard on East Limestone Road about 12:44 p.m., the sheriff said.

The suspect, Mitchell Joseph Caldwell, 35, of 18384 Oakdale Road, Lot P, Athens, had an outstanding warrant for his arrest on a previous charge of domestic violence. State troopers also charged him with leaving the scene of an accident.

No one was injured in the traffic accident.
