Woman who flees, spits on and bites officers faces 7 charges

A woman who led Athens Police on a chase Wednesday, then battled officers at the jail — spitting at one and biting another — is facing multiple criminal charges.

Athens Police Department attempted to stop a silver Nissan Altima Wednesday that was speeding westbound at more than 90 mph on U.S. 72 near Interstate 65, Capt. Trevor Harris said Wednesday.

The driver, Victoria Renee Simpson, 23, of 755 W. Alabama St., Florence, was exceeding 90 as she passed Walmart in Athens, but Officer Bobby Hand was eventually able to stop her on U.S. 72 near Grace Avenue, Harris said.

“Simpson fought with officers as they took her into custody,” he said. “While attempting to secure the seat belt around her in the back seat of a patrol car, Simpson spit in Officer Joe Kimery's face and bit Officer Hand on his forearm. She was eventually buckled in the patrol car. While officers were examining the bite and wiping saliva, Simpson unbuckled her seat belt and kicked a window out of the back of the patrol car.”

Simpson was immediately transported to the Limestone County Jail until the booking process could be completed, Harris said.

She was charged with attempting to elude, resisting arrest, second-degree assault, second-degree criminal mischief, driving under the influence of alcohol, possession of a controlled substance and reckless driving, which is a traffic citation. Officers also found prescription medication in her car.

The patrol car door and window frame and glass sustained $1,300 in damage, Harris said.

She is being held in the Limestone County Jail, where bail is set at $16,500.
