CASA seeks heaters for elderly

With Jack Frost about to rear his head, many Limestone County residents are busy preparing for the colder days ahead.

However, some of the county’s elderly need heaters and other supplies to weather the cold.

Sandra Zirbel, director of Limestone County Care Assurance Systems for the Aging and Homebound, said the organization can use donations of small space heaters (110 voltage).

CASA — an agency that helps the elderly and homebound continue living in their own homes — hopes the public can help.

“All donations made to CASA will be used here for our elderly in the county,” Zirbel said.

Cash donations earmarked for the project and new heaters (no used heaters) will be accepted.

CASA also coordinates a weatherization program, which helps elderly homeowners and tenants ready homes for winter. While CASA purchases all material needed for the work, volunteers are needed to provide labor, according to Zirbel.

Cold weather safety tips

• Check on elderly family members and neighbors. The elderly are particularly susceptible to cold-related illness;

• Restrict infants’ outdoor exposure when it is colder than 40 degrees;

• Keep pets indoors if possible. If pets are kept outdoors, make sure he or she is in a dry, draft-free shelter. The floor should be raised a few inches off the ground and covered with cedar shavings or straw. Turn the house away from the wind and cover the doorway with waterproof burlap or heavy plastic.
