2 charged in car burglary cases

Based on information released by Athens Police on Thursday, an Athens man and woman are in custody in connection with a rash of vehicle burglaries this week, as well as an unsolved car burglary from last year.

Fernandaz Courtez Burruss, 26, of 2101 Stanford Street, was arrested Tuesday. He is charged with four counts of unlawful breaking and entering a vehicle.

Kelly Jean Jacobs, of 2101 Stanford St., was also arrested Tuesday. She is charged with two counts of unlawful breaking and entering a vehicle.

Burruss is accused of taking a purse with a cellphone, cash and other property from a vehicle at the Murphy USA gas station in the Walmart parking lot on Oct. 21, said Police Chief Floyd Johnson.

Police said Burruss is also accused of taking a purse with an iPhone and medication from a vehicle at Murphy USA on Oct. 24.

Burruss’ third charge is for allegedly taking a purse with a cellphone, checkbook and a phone card from a vehicle at the Athens-Limestone Public Library, Johnson said.

“Investigator Eric White had developed a vehicle (identification) and descriptions of two suspects possibly involved in the thefts,” Johnson said. “Late Tuesday afternoon, Sgt. Dusty Meadows was patrolling on South Jefferson Street when he observed a vehicle fitting the description of the suspect’s vehicle.

“He stopped the vehicle in the parking lot at Taco Bell. While searching the vehicle, officers located purses, cellphones and the identification (cards) of different victims.”

The fourth charge for Burruss is related to a theft that occurred in October 2012 on Elm Street. Jacobs is charged in connection with this incident for allegedly taking a purse with cash, ID, medication and a cellphone from a vehicle at Murphy’s on Oct. 21 of that year, police said.

Both were booked at the Police Department and taken to Limestone County Jail. Jail records show that bond is $2,500 per charge for Burruss and Jacobs, and they were still in custody as of Friday afternoon.
