— Athens Elementary School students will see a new principal when they walk through the doors Aug. 19 for the start of the new school year.

Scott Sutton, an Elkmont graduate and assistant principal at Madison Cross Roads Elementary in Toney, will take over as principal for Ronnie Poole, who retired after serving as principal since 1996.

Athens school board members unanimously approved the hiring of Sutton as well as other employees this week, including Victoria Waldrep as an instructional aide at Cowart Elementary School and Kelley Rigsby as kindergarten teacher at Brookhill Elementary School.

Board members also accepted the retirements of John Bond, language arts teacher at Athens Middle School and Finee Downing, reading coach at Brookhill.
