From staff reports
Former HealthSouth Chief Financial Officer Aaron Beam will speak at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Athens State University in the Sandridge Student Center Ballroom.
Beam’s speech will explain how he and Richard Scrushy founded HealthSouth and grew the company into a NYSE Fortune 500 company before fraud allegations and convictions threatened to destroy the company. Beam found himself in the middle of a corporate scandal, lost almost everything and ended up in prison.
Athens State Department Chair of Accounting Linda Hemingway arranged for Beam to speak at Athens State to College of Business students and to the public.
“I feel Mr. Beam’s story is a great one of ethical consequences,” Hemingway said. “It is a story of great gain, a greater loss and the role that ethics plays in a corporate structure. We hope our students will learn a great deal from his circumstances.”
Beam’s lecture is open to the public as part of Athens State’s Livingston Concert Lecture Series. The event qualifies for one hour of NASBA A&A (Ethics) Continuing Professional Education (CPE) credit.
