ATHENS — Athens Police have identified a person of interest in the murder of a 32-year-old Athens woman.

Chief Floyd Johnson told The News Courier today police have interviewed a person of interest in the stabbing death of Sharon Wellington.

A preliminary autopsy shows Wellington died of multiple stab wounds to the upper body, Johnson told The News Courier today.

Friends who had not heard from Wellington for a couple of days went to her apartment at 1410 E. Elm St. about 7 p.m. Friday and found her body.

Asked if police believe the victim knew her attacker, the chief said, "It is our belief, right now, that the victim and the offender did know each other."
