Today is the first Wednesday in February, an unofficial holiday for those that follow college football recruiting. High school football players across the country will announce where they will commit to play football for the next four years.
Locally, a trio of Athens players and four Tanner players will sign letters of intent Wednesday morning. Athens’ Jordan Campbell, Earnest Hendrix and Adam Harvey and Tanner’s Greg Maclin, Trey Fletcher, Fred Rich and Kyle Shoulders are the seniors that will announce where they attend college in the fall.
Campbell, a tight end for the Golden Eagles, is signing at Jacksonville State while Hendrix, a defensive lineman will sign for Harding. Adam Harvey, the team’s starting quarterback to begin the season will sign with UNA as a place kicker and punter.
Tanner will have four players from its 2012 state championship team sign with colleges Wednesday. Greg Maclin, an all-state defensive back will sign with UAB while fellow all-state players Fred Rich and Kyle Shoulders plan to sign with UNA and Miles College respectively.
Trey Fletcher will sign for West Alabama and can play on the either side of the line.
Two more Athens students — Grace Morgan and Klaire Phillips — will sign soccer scholarships to play at UAH.
Athens signing day ceremonies begin at 8:30 a.m. Tanner’s players will sign at 8:45 a.m.
